Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS), determines if an embryo has all chromosomes present and normal. This shows the doctor which embryos have the highest success of growing into a healthy baby. Without PGS it is impossible to detect which embryo to transfer without a good chance of miscarrying, or they may never implant. The sex is also known at this point.
PGS costs approximately $3500US to test 8 embryos and is optional at all clinics we recommend. The embryos must grow approximately five days before they can be biopsied for this test. After the biopsy, embryos are then frozen until test results are returned from the lab, which can take 1-2 weeks.
Preimplantation genetic diagnostics (PGD), tests for a specific disease and is a further step after PGS is done. It is quite expensive and done if there is a known disease present in the egg or sperm donor.
