A Donor’s Experience in California, 2013
Nothing describes my Egg Donor experience more precisely than the foundation’s saying “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.”
Initially, I saw Egg Donation as an opportunity to travel and see beautiful places but I soon realized it offered a greater opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. I began deeply researching Egg Donation procedures and realized that there are more couples who go through the pain of infertility than I thought. About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the United States have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This incited me to pursue the idea of donating. As time went by, I interacted with the receiving couple and knew I was on the right path. We had several things in common and I knew in my heart that if giving something that I didn’t need would help them realize their dreams of becoming parents, I would do so without thinking twice. I made up my mind that my life had to be a message to the world, an inspiring message and I wanted them to experience the joy of parenthood; the same joy that that my daughter brings me every day.
My experience wouldn’t be the same if I hadn’t met the remarkable people at Global Egg Donors. Karen and Robin truly made my stay in California memorable and through our interaction; I developed a great respect and love for both women. They put their hearts into what they do and it’s apparent in the way they treat their donors and intended parents. As my donation date drew closer, I realized that it was the end of a life-changing journey for me but could be the beginning of a fruitful one for the recipient couple and being a part of that is a blessing far greater than I expected.
To anyone considering donating, I would tell you that the road is not easy but it is worth every bit of your time. Being dedicated and positive certainly helped me along the way. It provides a great opportunity to visit several places around the world due to Global Egg Donors clinics in Barbados, California, Cyprus and South Africa. This is a great opportunity for donors to meet great people, visit interesting places and do new things. I got to visit California with my daughter and we explored various tourist locations. It was a great experience that will forever remain treasured.
"It’s such an awesome feeling to know I have helped people in a way that not many people can! It really makes me realise what is important in life and what is worth spending energy on."
"It’s a strange gig, being an egg donor – you feel so invested in a couple you've never met; you have so much hope and love and joy and other cheesy conceptual nouns for them – it is a difficult thing to explain. I really am cheering for you guys so loudly you can probably hear it!"
"I might not be someone who goes sky diving or climbing Mount Everest to collect money for charity, but this is my Mount Everest. Donating eggs to another woman is one of my greatest achievements, memories and experiences in my life. "
